According to the Book of Esther in the Hebrew Bible Haman, royal vizier to King Ahasuerus, planned to kill all the Jews in the empire, but his plans were foiled by Mordecai and his adopted daughter, Queen Esther. It took God's intervention in the person of Esther to save the Jewish people.

Today, Israel has its own military to protect the Jewish people. The Israel Defense Forces swear to be a guard against all who would kill or oprress Jews, either in Israel or abroad.
