'Operation Hourglass'

What does the name Eilat mean to you? To Israelis and visitors to the Holy Land, Eilat is synonymous with 'carefree vacation'! Terms that also spring to mind are 'sun', 'Red Sea' and 'ambience' – where else in the world can you disembark from a flight and walk straight into the center of town - even to your luxury hotel, or self-catering apartment? Eilat also boasts a dolphin beach, a captivating marine park, and trips over to Jordan, Sinai, and into Egypt ...

Hold those thoughts: focus for a moment on 'Arab Spring' and 'revolution in Egypt'; sobering reality begins to kick in as news articles on Sinai jihadis surface into recent memory. Eilat in summer sizzles - in 2013, however, it is with unseen military activity.

More and more Israeli soldiers are being deployed to the area as security precautions reach unprecedented levels. 'Operation Hourglass', in cooperation with Egyptian military forces, is Israel's current response to an influx of weaponry and Islamist guerrillas from the North to the Sinai Peninsula; and to aircraft missile attacks from Egypt-based militants taking advantage of that ancient land's present political and civil turmoil.

Keep in mind also that 40 to 50 degrees Celcius (104 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit) are the normal temperatures in Eilat during the summer months, and it goes without saying that our young men and women in the Israeli Defense Force could do with a little pampering.
