One of the communities adjacent to the Gaza Strip that came under regular fire from Hamas, in the months leading up to and during Operation Protective Edge, was kibbutz Kfar Azza. The kibbutz is situated opposite Gaza City and the Shuja'iyya neighbourhood which housed a vast arsenal of weapons including masses of rockets and mortars which were launched at Israel during the conflagration.

Often children are reluctant to finish their summer holidays because for many of them the beginning of the school year means getting back into a routine: getting up early, learning in classrooms and doing homework daily. This year in Israel everything is a little different: the kids were actually longing for a daily routine.

Bomb shelters instead of trips, summer camps and beaches

Over the past two months around 750,000 children and youth of Israel, who live in cities which have been targeted and hit by rockets, have been forced to spend their summer holidays in bomb shelters instead of spending their time in summer camps or at the beach. The traumatic experiences of war time, the constant fear, day and night, from flying Hamas rockets will have a long-term effect on them.
