Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.
Psalms 127:3

In a few weeks Israel will be celebrating the joyous holiday of Purim. One of the main activities of this celebration is the sending of Mishloach Manot (Gift Baskets) from family to family. This holiday is one that is especially memorable for children. They will dress up in costume and participate in street parades.

Unfortunately, there are many children whose parents cannot afford to involve their children in this festive time as a result of their economic circumstances. Many children rely on basic nourishment at after school centers, where they congregate in the afternoons.

Israel Today has been committed for many years to ensuring a quality life for all Israeli children. This year, as in previous years, we will be concentrating our efforts to help children from needy families to enable them to enjoy this time of the year.

Through the generosity of our subscribers and readers of the magazine, Israel Today will be able to:

  • provide Mishloach Manot to needy families
  • support underprivileged children, for example, by providing meals and financing extra-mural activities

Poverty among the youngest and the weakest in our nation has reached a shockingly high rate. The rate of poor children in Israel has risen more than 50% since 1998 and continues to increase.

Today, 47% of families with 4 or more children experience food insecurity. The most dramatic increase in Israel’s poverty statistics was that of impoverished children, which is now at 36%.

Israel’s government has put minimal efforts towards solving poverty problems and many mothers and fathers are seen begging in the marketplace just to feed their families.

Many Israeli children are seen in the city by themselves, while their parents are somewhere else from morning until night, trying to make ends meet.

This startling rise in child poverty should bring us to create solutions for this ever-increasing problem.

Children are our future and they are priceless gifts from God. How can turn our back on these innocent victims? God has a plan and purpose for their life; and we can help them and give them support.

You can help an Israeli child in need by sending a gift of support. Your gift will put food on their table and help them to grow up to become the leaders of tomorrow.
