It’s a festive time in Israel, a time of celebration and redemption. We at the Israel Today office are busy preparing to help Ethiopian-Israeli children celebrate their first Purim as Israeli citizens. But we need your help to make sure these precious children have a happy holiday.
Purim is a time to celebrate the Jewish people's redemption from the hands of Haman, a vizier to King Ahasuerus. The Book of Esther, recited on this holiday by Jews throughout the world, tells the story of how the Jewish woman Esther saved the Jews of Persia.
Reflecting these Biblical stories, the modern state of Israel has worked tirelessly to promote an ingathering of the Jewish people throughout the world, wherever they may be. 
Jewish immigrants from Ethiopia - a long-lost tribe of Israel, if you will - have been streaming home for decades now. But their transition is rarely easy.
Despite the joy of living in a time that they can return to the land of their forefathers, Israel's Ethiopian immigrants typically arrive with little more than the shirts on their backs. They must also integrate into a new society that is far more different from what they are used to than it is for, say, immigrants from America or Europe
That makes many of these Ethiopians the most needy of Israel's citizens, and the state strains under the weight of providing assistance, while at the same time dedicating itself to bring all Jews home.
