The Value of our Children: Priceless

Many families in Israel are distressed as they hear of new government plans to raise taxes, introduce taxes on fruits and vegetables, and cut funding on child payments. The government hopes that tightening spending will keep the deficit under control, despite global recession.

Each family receives a monthly stipend per child, and the new budget plan is to reduce these payments. This would affect large families the most, who rely on these payments as a part of their monthly budget.

The new government is planning to make a lot of changes, which will affect different sectors of the population in various ways, but will particularly have an adverse effect on the poor and middle-class in Israel, who make up the majority. The government once had a stance to encourage the growth of big families, giving a larger stipend to those with 4 or more children. Now the plan is to have a smaller, flat rate for each child, regardless of family size, which will reduce the stipend for large families by hundreds of shekels every month.

Children are a priceless treasure to their parents, and also to Israel, as they are the future of Israeli society. Raising children is not a luxury, but a great responsibility that comes with sacrifice, from the parent and from the community. But why should the children pay the price – are they the ones who should suffer to pay the nation’s deficit? With poverty in Israel on the rise, and in particular, poverty among large families, they need all the help they can get.

You can help some of these families who are struggling to make ends meet. Your gift will help them take care of their children, who are the future of Israel. Click here.
