SPY AND DIPLOMAT: Halevy talks about war and peace
Ephraim Halevy, the former head of Israel’s famed Mossad intelligence agency, has been both a spy and a diplomat. Born in Great Britain in 1934, he immigrated to Israel in 1948 and served 40 years in Israeli intelligence. He was the
ninth head of the Mossad, serving from 1998 to 2002.
Halevy maintained close relations with Jordan’s King Hussein, playing an instrumental role in the peace agreement between the two countries in 1994. He served as special envoy for several prime ministers including Yitzhak Shamir, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, Benjamin Netanyahu, Ehud Barak and Ariel Sharon. In 1996, he was appointed Israeli ambassador to the European Union. Since 2003, he has headed the Shasha Center for Strategic Studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Halevy discussed the Iranian nuclear threat and Israeli options with editor-in-chief Aviel Schneider.
