Egypt furious after US Congress applauds Israel's '67 victory

Egypt on Saturday issued an angry response to a US House of Representatives resolution passed last week that congratulated Israel on its victory in the 1967 Six Day War and the resulting reunification of Jerusalem.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alaa al-Hadidi told Agence France Presse that the resolution was “unacceptable in both form and content.”

House Concurrent Resolution 152, which was passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority, conveys Congress' congratulations to “the residents of Jerusalem and the people of Israel on the 40th anniversary of the reunification of that historic city.”

It also urges US President George W. Bush to finally comply with the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act by moving the American embassy to the Israeli capital.

Hadidi claimed that UN resolutions passed in the aftermath of the Six Day War leave “no room for arguing against east Jerusalem as being occupied Arab land,” and insisted that the position of the US Congress would only “complicate the situation.”

Hadidi's interpretation of the relevant UN resolutions - which is shared by most of the Arab world - has been contested by the very authors of the documents themselves.
