Israeli intelligence again warns of summer war

Israel's chief of military intelligence on Sunday reiterated his warning that any number of very likely scenarios could lead to a full-scale war between the Jewish state and its neighbors as early as this summer.

Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting, Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin noted that Iran, Syria, Hizballah and Hamas are all working against Israel, and that while none of them are in a position to initiate a military conflict, a miscalculation on their part would lead to war.

Last summer's conflagration with Hizballah resulted from a similar miscalculation.

But the government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert appeared to maintain its policy of downplaying Yadlin's assessments and the possibility of war. Observers have noted that if, as Israel's intelligence community has been warning for months, there is a war this summer, Israel will be even less prepared than it was for the Second Lebanon War.
