California man told 'Jews need to be killed'

A Jewish resident of San Francisco said he was the victim of a virulent anti-Semitic tirade by an employee of a popular local grocery store, and that no one in the liberal northern California city seems to care.

David Alexander Nahmod told the Jewish Internet news site j. that on a routine visit to the Rainbow Grocery Cooperative late last year, a counterwoman told him during the course of a checkout line conversation that “the Jews need to be killed, it’s the only way to get them off Palestinian land.”

Nahmod was informed that he was “just a stupid Jew” after daring to protest.

Nahmod recently filed a complaint with San Francisco's Human Rights Commission, but said every attempt to get local media to cover the incident had been rejected.

He noted that if such racist remarks were made to a homosexual or African-American “it’d be on the 6 o’clock news and people would be running through the streets with banners that say ‘Stop the hate.’ But you call someone a ‘stupid Jew’ and it’s acceptable.”

The Rainbow Grocery Cooperative gained notoriety in 2002 when several of its departments tried to boycott Israeli products. Negative press coverage ultimately thwarted the boycott.
