The edge was called the hem, quarter, or wing. the fringes number 613 repesent the number of laws given Moses. wrapped into a cord & attached in knots. the number of windings correspond in the numerical value of the Hebrew letters Yh & Wh & ECHAD which spell "THE LORD IS ONE"
