A leading Syrian newspaper on Monday accused the US of pushing Israel toward war with Syria in order to forward American interests in the region.

The daily newspaper Tishrin, a mouthpiece of the ruling Baath Party, wrote in its editorial that Washington is behind instability throughout the Middle East, from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Iraq.

The paper blasted the US for increasing military aid to Israel, which it claimed was being prevented by Washington from “returning to peace talks.”

“The American regime...is pushing [Israel] to a military adventure,” according to Tishrin. The paper asserted that the US needs Israel to win a war against Syria after what it says was Israel's defeat at the hands of Hizballah last year.
