Israeli humanitarian aid organization IsraAID dispatched a team of six doctors and nurses to Peru on Monday to assist in rescue efforts and providing medical care after a major earthquake killed more than 500 and wounded thousands of others last week.

Centered on the town of Pisco, the earthquake measured 8.0 on the Richter scale.

The Israeli team is being funded by the American Jewish Committee and B'nai Brit International, and will work closely with the local Jewish community in Peru, reported Ha'aretz.

Israel's Foreign Ministry also came to Peru's aid late last week by transferring $20,000 earmarked for tents and blankets by the tens of thousands left homeless by the earthquake.
