Worrying number of US experts say America-Israel alliance damaging

A leading US political journal published the results of a recent survey on Monday showing that 14 percent of individuals described as America's top foreign policy experts believe the alliance with Israel does not serve US national interests.

The survey was part of an annual “terrorism index” conducted by the journal Foreign Policy, and was participated in by former US secretaries of state, national security advisors, senior White House aides and other top political and military officials.

The country chosen as the one least serving US national security interests was Russia, with 34 percent of the vote. Egypt was chosen by only 5 percent of the respondents, and Saudi Arabia was nearly on par with Israel with 17 percent of the vote.

An Israeli government official who spoke to The Jerusalem Post noted that 14 percent is a relatively insignificant minority, but admitted to being somewhat concerned by the numbers.

“Considering the closeness and importance of our ties with Washington, this is something we need to watch,” he told the newspaper.
