Yom Kippur is an exciting day for Israeli children, the only day of the year when they are allowed to roam and ride their bikes freely on streets empty of all vehicular activity. But one such bike ride ended in tragedy for an eight-year-old girl in northern Israel.

As Yom Kippur began on Friday evening and Israeli men and women headed to local synagogues, Tal Zino joined the rest of the children of Kfar Tavor on the town's empty roads.

Moments later, a young Arab man from a neighboring village came roaring into Kfar Tavor on his All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), spurning the demands of local residents to leave the town on this most holy of days by driving even faster and more wildly. As the young Arab sped down a hill on the town's main road, he slammed into Tal Zino, leaving her critically wounded.

Local residents prevented the Arab man, who had broken his arm in the crash, from escaping the scene, and he was taken into custody by police. Some residents who spoke to Army Radio insisted that the disrespectful young Arab purposely hit the girl, who died a short time later at a nearby hospital.
