North Korea tries to shift nuclear focus on US, Israel

North Korea's communist regime on Tuesday accused the United States of aiding Israel in developing nuclear weapons, while denying it and other nations the right to engage in what it called “peaceful” nuclear activities.

The Tuesday editorial in North Korea's leading communist party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, asserted that the US has “long actively promoted and cooperated with the Israeli nuclear armament plan.”

The Associated Press quoted the paper as claiming America “dispatched nuclear experts to Israel and transferred highly enriched uranium, the key ingredient for nuclear weapons, to them.”

Israel has maintained a policy of nuclear ambiguity over the decades, despite widespread belief that the Jewish state is a nuclear power.

The North Korean accusations regarding US assistance in the Israeli nuclear program came just weeks after a squadron of Israeli air force jets allegedly bombed a suspected nuclear facility in eastern Syria that experts believe was equipped by Pyongyang. According to media reports, undercover Israeli commandos operating in Syria over the summer acquired evidence of North Korean nuclear activity in Syria.
