Most Israelis view US President George W. Bush as one of their nation's very best friends in the international community, but most feel the American leader is doing them no favors with his mad rush to conclude a final status Israeli-Palestinian peace deal before he leaves office a year from now.

According to a survey conducted Wednesday by Ha'aretz and the Dialog polling company, a 42 percent majority of Israelis see the Middle East peace summit Bush hastily convened in Annapolis, Maryland this week as a failure. A further 25 percent said the event was nothing more than a photo-op, and had not brought their region any closer to true peace.

While over 50 percent of those polled said they do want to reach a peace agreement with the Arab world, they are no longer under the illusion that their purported peace partners are willing to or capable of delivering.

Analysts warned that while no substantial concessions were made at Annapolis, the summit did open the door for the Bush Administration to ram through a peace agreement that, if it is to be concluded within 12 months, will be necessarily detrimental to the Jewish state.
