Israel kills 10 Gaza terrorists, sparking rocket barrage

Israeli forces killed at least 10 Islamic Jihad terrorists during a series of aerial attacks and limited ground incursions in the Gaza Strip overnight. Among the casualties was the Islamic Jihad commander in charge of the group's campaign of rocket attacks against southern Israel.

Following the raids, Islamic Jihad terrorists fired 12 rockets and mortar shells at Israeli communities in the vicinity of Gaza, causing damage but no injuries. The Israeli army raised the alert level in the area and warned that more rocket attacks could be expected throughout the day in light of its successes against the terrorists.

Islamic Jihad, a sister organization to the ruling Hamas terror group, has carried out the bulk of rocket attacks on southern Israel since Hamas seized control of Gaza last June.

A rocket fired by the group on Sunday lightly wounded a three-year-old Israeli child when it slammed into the side of his home in a southern Israel kibbutz. The child's mother, who was sitting just several feet from her son at the time of the attack, was treated for shock.

A report released by the Israeli army on Sunday revealed that with recent improvements in Palestinian rocket technology, some 190,000 Israeli civilians now live under direct threat of artillery attacks from Gaza.
