Egypt allowed Gaza to bring $100 million into Gaza

Far from aiding in the battle against Hamas control of Gaza, the head of the Israel Security Agency or Shin Bet told his Knesset overseers on Sunday that Egypt recently allowed senior Hamas members to smuggle more than $100 million into the coastal territory.

Ignoring objections from Israel, Egypt permitted Gazan Muslims returning from the annual pilgrimage to Mecca last month to cross the Gaza-Egypt border without proper security checks, ISA chief Yuval Diskin reported to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Israel warned for months prior that the religious event would be exploited by Hamas to bring additional arms, funds and terrorist know-how into Gaza.

Diskin said that despite the impoverished conditions in Gaza, intelligence shows that Hamas is using the money to bolster its military capabilities rather than help the people living under its rule.
