Israel on Monday bowed to growing international pressure by easing its limited embargo on the supply of industrial fuel to the Gaza Strip.

The decision was made as world leaders decided to convene the UN Security Council in emergency session to discuss the sanctions imposed on Gaza in response to ongoing Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israel.

Over the weekend, the fuel embargo resulted in Gaza's largest electrical plant shutting down. International media immediately published images of a blacked-out Gaza where millions were purportedly living in darkness without basic amenities. That in turn led to widespread condemnation of Israel for defending its own people in a way that allegedly affected all Gazans.

Israeli officials later revealed that Israel's electric company supplies 75 percent of Gaza's electricity, and said the Gaza blackout was nothing more than a Hamas-organized farce aimed at further demonizing the Jewish state.
