A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized last week in Jerusalem after a “modesty guard” spilled acid on her for wearing pants.

The attack occurred in Beitar Illit, a Jerusalem suburb where tensions between religious and secular residents are on the rise. Paramedic Dror Eini said the girl told them that “the modesty guards have been threatening her for quite some time.”

“If she would have been wearing the same thing in Jerusalem or in Tel Aviv, she would not have stuck out in any way,” he said.

A witness said the attacker stopped the girl and asked her for directions. Then, after confirming her surname, he spilled a bottle of acid on her.

The girl was released from the hospital after the attack.
