Study on snake evolution upholds Bible account

An international team of scientists including a professor from Israel's Technion Institute concluded in a recent study that snakes were once four-legged creatures.

The findings, which were published in the scientific journal Nature, seemed to uphold the account in the biblical Book of Genesis where God curses the serpent for having played a role in deceiving mankind and sentences the creature to thereafter slither on its belly.

The study attributes the change to a slow evolutionary process, but indirectly acknowledges that the loss of limbs was not a positive change for snakes, contradicting the belief of evolutionists that evolutionary changes are always a step forward.

to my county!!! It might be ME heading to the next county if I came upon one!!!

3 .  Yep, I think I wrote it Carol
well maybe not, but I did sing it!
I had a brother who was terrified of snakes he cleaned out the whole woodpile one day trying to kill one with the firewood.
When I got to the yard, wood was scattered everywhere, and he was sitting up on the porch still scared!
The snake probably went to the next county.

4 .  Hi, Ellie, I don''t like snakes either!!
I am reminded of an old rock song, "I don''t like spiders & snakes........." Remember that one??? That''s me, don''t like either of them!!!
God Bless

5 .  Objectivity & Evolution
Genesis does not indicate how long it took (microseconds vs eons) for the snake to lose it legs. If ALL snakes world-wide lost their legs simultaneously upon G-d''s command (mind you, their jaws and digestive system changed at the same time) then it would be defined as a miracle. However, if it was a gradual change, it would technically be called evolution.

Note: Darwin used the term evolution, but he doesn''t have a patent on it, nor does it belong to commies or humanists or others of their ilk. ''Evolution'' (like, e.g., entropy) is a useful technical term with defined meanings. So folks shouldn''t get hung up on it.

It is apparent that most bloggers on this page speak in religious terms and seldom relate events to measurable time and defined processes, while I (with 40 years in engineering and 30 years as a Christian elder) speak in both religious and technical terms. However, it sounds as though we are in violent agreement that G-d will resolve all the open questions when He returns.

6 .  The Serpent is still at work with the lies...
The biggest thing he has made to propagate is to teach mankind how to speak with the same forked tongue that he does! The obvious leg bone stubs that exist in snakes verify what was done in the Garden, yet man would still rather believe a lie.Not only believe a lie, but go and make up a new one.

7 .  Well, some of you know this topic well.
I am reminded of two four year old twin brothers in my pre-school class that absolutely could not put down books on every creepy, crawling creature that ever lived.
They knew their names and more about them, than I Knew! I just sat back and let them (both talking at once) tell me all the facts.
I enjoyed all your enlightening comments but
I never liked snakes, and go out of my way at the zoo to not see them.
I like llittle llizards. I''ve never see anything as fast as them! Especially when I''m trying to catch one to throw back outside. But snakes, from beginning to end I don''t like them. I don''t like snakes!!

8 .  The loss of the serpents legs...
was a result of GOD''S curse...NOT evolution.

9 .  Objectivity
The acknowledging of truth does not exclude objectivity, but any foundation based on a lie does. That type of foundation has to distort and twist information to try to fit a mutation of true science.

Communism, paganism, humanism, all have the theory of evolution as a foundational element of their belief system. All worship a god of their own making, whether it be self, or some other malignant object. And all deny the Living God of Creation, and His Son Jesus Christ.

God will settle the matter in the Great Tribulation that is just around the corner of time. Then every knee shall bow every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God. In addition the earth will be filled with the Knowledge of the Lord. The objective infallible truth of God.

10 .  Kaus on the curse of sin
Summarizing your letter, the impetus for adaptation and genome mutation is mankind''s sin, to which G-d responded with a catastrophic global flood that (incidentally) wiped out the protective moisture canopy, leaving Terra exposed to harmful cosmic particles, the various results of which scientists call evolution.

Now that we understand what happened, will G-d permit bio-engineers adequate time to devise and implement a devolution plan? Oh yes, that''s what some of them would like to do! -)

BTW, I have read some ICR and RTB material. Their starting position is that G-d cre8ed according to Genesis so their conclusions are usually biased in that direction, making objectivity impossible. So I also read classical scientists (some of whom are biased in the opposite direction), in order to get a balanced picture.

Thank you for your comments. Shalom

11 .  Word of God............
we only need to read God''s words and we can know the Truth! So sad they don''t allow it in the class rooms. When I was a child we did have it in the class room but taken away in the late 50''s. And evolution was crammed down our throats in science and biology class but some of us stood up for the Genesis story as the real Truth.

13 .  One more thing
We are living in a sin cursed world where everything is decaying, everything is being degraded from what it originaly was d to be.

The canopy that once protected this earth from cosmic rays and their harmful effects, is no longer there.

When God looked upon everything He d, He pronounced it good. No mutations, no genetic imbalance, no flaws whatsoever. All that dramatically changed when sin entered the world. The wages of sin brought death to all things, after a perfect Creation by God Almighty.

All creation groans and awaits the millennial reign of Jesus Christ, and a new heaven and a new earth after that.

David E. Kaus   8/7/2008 2:38 AM
14 .  Modifications - mutations - adaptations
There are changes to species along horizontal lines, not vertical, micro development, not macro evolution. Variety of species, ie, many types of dogs, but all in the dog family.

A mutation does not enhance a species it degrades it, a change for the worse not for better.

Here is a web sit for more specifics on the subject: ICR - Institute for creation research, founded by the late Dr. Henry Morris.

Re: "...how did it survive to evolve so that it could survive?" A snake''s lower jaw is connected to its skull with fibers instead of a joint, so that it can engulf prey of various sizes. During the time its jaw was connected to its skull with a joint, it had to be careful that it ingested only prey that were smaller than its gullet. Another nicety is that the snake''s teeth are specially-oriented to partly compensate for lack of front paws. Presumably, the teeth were modified when the legs were lost - hence the idea of "intelligent evolution."

Sabba   8/7/2008 1:43 AM
16 .  Study on Snake
The part of the study I read also said that over thousands of years, some of the bones in the snake''s head disjoined from the bones of the skull. This was done so that the snake could open it''s mouth wider to eat. As it was before and after "losing" its legs, it was not able to catch anything in its mouth to eat because it lost its legs. This also was part of the evolutionary process. My question is "During all of those thousands of years before the bones disjoined so the snake could eat, how did it survive to evolve so that it could survive?"

Annie   8/6/2008 10:47 PM
17 .  The man didn''t warn his wife
of the craftiness of the snake, a fact he would know since he named it. Instead, he just listened to his wife''s conversation with the snake and said nothing. The man did not protect the garden and ward off the serpents deceptions to his woman.

And then to top it off, the man then makes a decision all by himself without discussing things with his wife (and warning her NOT to eat) and eats in rebellion, which rebellion brings sin into the whole of creation.

Its a wonder God didn''t do more to the man. But God had already set the punishment for disobedience - death.

18 .  Ben Kaus
Regis points out that weeds adapt to herbicides. He ascribes that change to evolution. Dr. Spencer Wells notes that the DNA of each generation is modified by cosmic rays and other random processes. He suggests that the results (new characteristics in the next generation) are also evolution.

Religious emotions aside, REGARDLESS of what we call them (evolution or something else) we know that adaptation and mutations occur. So did they originate with G-d, "...by whom all things were made," or not? If not, then by what/whom?

Sabba   8/6/2008 7:24 PM
19 .  Seeds of Truth
The significance of this article is that, in its own way, the Bible calls things accurately. It has taken human science thousands of years to recognize that the snake devolved its legs, but a simple reading of the Bible, written thousands of years ago, reveals that truth as a matter of fact. Arrogant mankind refuses to acknowledge the truth and wisdom of God''s Word.

20 .  That''s devolution not the lie of evolution
Mathematical probability, immense complexity, countless variety, intelligent design, all speak of a Great and Wonderful Creator - God Almighty, and His Son Jesus Christ.

The lie of evolution has run its'' course, and anyone still in control of his reason knows it.

David E. Kaus   8/6/2008 6:47 PM
21 .  AT LAST WE NOW KNOW
Cre8tion came first, then evolution. Evolution is evident in your own family if you look for it, especially in mixed race breeding. Being a naturalist all my life I see it because I look for it. Weeds evolve quite quickly as herbicides are used and some become tolerant to the herbicide. Some will call it adaption, but it''s the same thing.

Regis   8/6/2008 6:27 PM
22 .  Dear Israel Today Staff
you yourselves do not seem to believe
in what you preach in your magazine.
I noticed like in the comments by
readers today, you often bar articles
from being read, that point out the
nonesense of evolution, but praise
God and the Bible for being totally
accurate, as proved time and time
again. Why is this?
You above everybody else should
gladly confess God.

I know your comment was made tongue-in-cheek, but it will not go over well with the ladies. We all know Eve was deceived by the serpent. Adam sinned willfully.
Shalom!

24 .  Because he listened to his wife...
...he was thrust out from the garden. That is amusing, because it apparently set a precedent for men who get into trouble when they listen to their wives. -) -)

Moral: Men must make their own decisions. -) -)

Shalom?

28 .  AT LAST WE NOW KNOW
In evolution no one in their right mind
believes.
The Bible, time and time again proves
that it can absolutely be believed and
relied on.
The author of the Bible, if He was an
Ape-man or perhaps already a cave man
must have Millions of years ago
witnessed the snake gradually losing
it`s limbs and must have thought
HECK - what is going on? It`s legs
keep just ping off. Only he could
not determine if it was one leg over
Millions of years again, or did it happen all at the same time? At any
rate he decided to better study
evolution to find out and keep
abreast of further Millions of years.

Sigvard von Brevern   8/6/2008 1:52 PM
29 .  Evolution itself is a lie of the serpent
