Shimon Peres to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth

Israeli media reported this week that the Israeli Embassy in London and Buckingham Palace are close to an agreement on having Queen Elizabeth confer honorary knighthood on Israeli President Shimon Peres when he visits the UK next month.

The appointment would make Peres a Knight Commander in the Order of St. Michael and St. George, a title usually reserved for British colonial affairs officials, foreign-service officers and high-ranking diplomats in Commonwealth countries.

However, the Queen has on numerous occasions appointed foreigners to the Order. Among some of the more famous are Bill Gates and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

The honorary nature of the appointment means Peres would not be entitled to prefix "Sir" before his name.

Israeli Foreign Ministry sources cited by The Jerusalem Post warned that the Israeli media's focus on the story could prevent Peres from being knighted during his upcoming visit, as opponents of the move will now try to scuttle it.

It is unbelievable and outrageous that this mass murderer should be considered for a knighthood.
Is the queen not aware that in 1996, while Peres (born, Sherman Persky in Poland) was serving as Israel''s prime minister, he approved an artillery assault on Quana, a UN compound in southern Lebanon full of refugees? At least 106 innocents were slaughtered and 116 wounded. A United Nations military investigation later determined it was unlikely that Israeli shelling of the U.N. compound was the result of technical or procedural errors, i.e., it was deliberate.
Shame on Britain and Queen Elizabeth.

Cy, I agree that the Catholic Church is a cult, use

to be a part of it for 46 years but, last I heard, the Queen belongs to the Church of England or Anglican Church which has problems of their own. When I was in Westmisnter Abbey, they stopped to have a prayer. It was the Our Father and they left out the part about "Thy kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven"? I guess they didn''t want to offend the Queen? My daughter pointed that out right away. Both of my daughters and I were in London for New Years and Boxer Day. My youngest was a cheerleader and marched in the parade. Had a week there, wish it could have been longer, a lot of history in the UK.

Rewards of men don''t mean much, the reward of

eternal life given as a gift of God is much greater and never ending. I already have mine by grace through faith, don''t need the title of men or in this case a queen, God says I am a saint, what a gift and no one can take it away from me forever. Now that is worth while. Trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ at the cross and His resurrection and you too can wear this best of all titles.

Candidates are identified by public or private bodies, by government departments or are nominated by members of the public. Depending on their roles, these people ed by committee are submitted either to the Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs or Secretary of State for Defence for their approval before being sent to the Queen for final approval.
Corruption is growing in this area too. It''s recently been revealed that every donor who has given £1,000,000 to the Labour Party (the present government) since 1997 has been given a Knighthood or a Peerage. Makes it rather a joke. I think all England will agree with you Ellie, that some '' ions'' are baffling.
