Bush warns Israel against Gaza, Iran attacks

US President George W. Bush has bluntly warned Israel against striking Iran's nuclear facilities or launching a broad military response to Hamas rocket fire from the Gaza Strip during his final weeks in office, according to Time magazine.

The warning was first issued last week by senior American officials to their counterparts in Israel, who told Time, "We have been warned off."

The instruction was expected to be repeated by Bush himself when he met with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday in Washington.

According to US officials cited in the article, the Bush Administration fears that an Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities will force Washington to completely revamp its policies across the Middle East in a way that is not conducive to American interests.

Earlier, some speculated that Olmert's meeting with Bush was actually a planning session for a strike on Iran prior to Barack Obama's swearing in on January 20.

As for Gaza, despite the devastating effect ongoing Palestinian rocket attacks are having on Israeli civilians, Bush is unwilling to have his "Roadmap" peace plan jeopardized by a strong Israeli response.

As the two men met the press for their last joint press conference as world leaders, Bush declared that his vision for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is alive and well.

Bush solicited the help of Jordan's King Abdullah last week in calming the Gaza situation. Abdullah dispatched a senior military official to urge Hamas to freeze all rocket fire on Israel, but he also summoned Olmert and Defense Minister Ehud Barak to Amman to caution them that an Israeli invasion of Gaza could compromise Israel's relations with Jordan and Egypt.

I read all comments and noted how many are sparked by the way the lead article was presented by Israel Today.
In this article note that it was the topic that generated the comments.
The article was speculative, with unnamed sources, etc..
Perhaps it does portray Mr. Bush''s view, but maybe not.
Seems wise to wait and see what actually is reported from Monday''s meeting.
Fueling the situation with terrorists, is
this week''s terrorist attack in India.
Its a terrible reminder of the dangers we face, and raising tensions throughout the world.
Iran is back in the news with reports of just how close they really are with a nuclear weapon.
It seems inconceivable that Israel doesn''t have a plan of action already for Irans Nuclear Plants.
Maybe it just makes a good smoke screen to report Mr. Bush isn''t supporting an attack on Iran.
If so, how does Iran view this report?

Obama/economy

I don''t have too much faith in Obama and the economy. Our economy had some problems but it wasn''t all that bad the first 6 years of Pres Bush admin. Other than the price of oil, which was about where it is now. However, once the far left (Pelosi and Reid) got into control everything went kaput!! They were supposed to get gas prices under control (never said how) and what happened they sky rocketed. Why, because of the ''green machine''. Prices of groceries went up. You expressed the same way I feel about Mr. Bush.
I believe him to be a man who cares deeply about America and the people, and I too believe his faith is real.
I guess the best thing about his leaving is that we won''t hear the continual attacks on him.
I saw him a couple months ago, (on TV) in a motorcade, stop in a small town, to go and wish this really elderly lady a happy birthday, as she sat on her lawn waiting to see his motorcade come by.
He sat beside her, posed for pictures, and "Made her Day". And he seemed to love doing so.
It seemed like a happy moment to him as well, but I thought to myself, that lady would never stop telling that story.
That is the way I see President Bush.

I think some will see him differently in time. I have never judged him by the Iraq War
Unfortunately most of his critics have.
Wonder how he would have been perceived had Iraq never been a factor?

If I were the leader of Israel I would invite any leader that it is against an Israeli retaliation into the Gaza strip to live in Sderot for at least one month. What Israel should do is, exactly what Alexander the Great did in the Gaza nearly 3 thousand years ago, "conquor the Gaza" strip!

They should be evicted.....

The Palistinians should be evicted....end of story. They are a scab on the whole region. Every time Israel conceeds land to them it only shuts them up for a while. Then they turn the liberal media... (world wide) especially in the U.K. and the U.S. ... against Israel as a weapon to start the whole process over again and again. Israel should just kick them out of Jerusalem and the whole country and take back what they have already lost to them in fruitless attempts to appease them by conceding land that G-D gave to our people. G-D wants Israel to defend itself! Who is to say that what Bush says or does or doesn''t do or say is not part of God''s plan. Personally, I don''t know God''s plan and I will not second guess what our country or Israel for that matter decides to do plus I am not privy to any intelligence information - are you?
