Palestinians reject US position, prefer Hamas over Abbas

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

While the Obama Administration has signaled that it wants a Palestinian government headed by Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah movement, average Palestinians have responded by saying they want the opposite - a government wholly controlled by the Hamas terrorist organization.

According to a poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, if Palestinian elections were held today Hamas would not only win a majority in the parliament, but its candidate for president would also beat out Abbas.

This was the first Palestinian poll that showed Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh beating Abbas for the presidency.

The Palestinian Authority was scheduled to hold general elections back in January, but the vote was postponed by Abbas due to the current rift between Hamas and his government.

It is widely expected that the Palestinians will hold elections later this year.
