Jerusalem police bar planned gay protest
The Jerusalem police banned a planned gay protest, which was to take place in Jerusalem on Thursday out of concern it could result in violent clashes. Although the International Gay Pride parade was canceled in Jerusalem due to the security situation in the north of the country, gay pride events are still taking place and city residents are still upset over it. The organizers of the protest vowed to go ahead with the protest.
Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said that while they are committed to freedom of expression they also have a right to prevent a “serious violation of public order.
“There is no legal basis for the police decision as such an event, which is not a demonstration, does not require a license,” said Haggai El-Ad, the executive-director of Jerusalem's Gay and Lesbian center.
The cancellation of the protest adds yet another defeat for Israel’s gay and lesbian community.
