Yom Kippur and the Messianic Believer
Our sins are cleansed by the blood of Yeshua, our Saviour and Messiah, but we are fasting and praying for our nation as priests and representatives of the High Priest Yeshua today!

In the current Jewish year 5768 that just started ten days ago, Yom Kippur falls on a shabbat. Every other day of fasting that falls on a shabbat is delayed or accelerated, be it Tisha Be’Av or the 17th-Tammus-Fasting, because on the holy shabbat you should not fast – except if it is Yom Kippur.

In case of Yom Kippur, because it is described in the Bible also as “Shabbat shabbaton” (meaning “times two”) it is permitted to fast even on shabbat. Already on Friday eve after sunset it starts. Neither eating or drinking is permitted till next sunset.

“Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the LORD. And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God” Leviticus 23:27-28

“It is a sabbath of solemn rest (shabbat shabbaton) for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever.” Leviticus 16:31

The word “afflict your souls” is an interesting term in the Hebrew language: initem nafshotehem. Out of the same word root we get “torment the soul”, agony and aslo “poor in spirit.”

Yes, how do we humble ourself? Through affliction and torment of our soul like Paul the apostle wrote. A broken heart and contrite spirit as King David wrote in Psalm 51.

“Blessed Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” – our Lord Yeshua said! Our will must be submitted to Him.

How has the “affliction of soul” became fasting? See Isaiah 58. Here we find in verse 3 the word-paralell: ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?’

It address to the Yom Kippur fasting where we need humble our souls through fasting and prayers!

On Yom Kippur – according to Jewish tradition – the gates of heaven are been closed and so also the Books in front of God. God’s Judgment has fallen over man. Therefore we wish each other the blessing: “May you be signed and sealed in the book of life!”!

In the Ten Days of Repentance from Rosh HaShanah to Yom Kippur numerous times the shofar horn is blown (some say even 100 times) to awake man to penitence, that man should search his heart and ask God and man for forgiveness. In Israel on Yom Kippur the streets are free of traffic, no cars, and the people walking in white to synagogues plead for mercy of “Avinu malkenu..” Our Father, our King!

Starting with the Kol Nidre prayer, when all the vows are loosed, untill the Ne’ila-closing prayer where the assembly proclaim seven times “Adonai hu ha-Elohim – The Lord is God!” – concluded with the blowing of a shofar that breaks the fasting.

“Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land.” Leviticus 25:9

“Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon, at the full moon, on our solemn feast day.” Psalm 81:4.

Yes, from the Day of the Blowing (in Shofars; Yom Teru’a that is today called Rosh HaShanah) until the Feast and Fasting of Yom Kippur!

More and more Messianic Jewish are today fasting on Yom Kippur, because Yeshua is our High Priest and we are his body and representatives, and so we should intercede and ask for mercies and forgiveness on this special day for our people in prayers and fasting – as once the High priest did when he entered once a year the Holy of Holies.

But when we are doing it let us do it as our Lord Yeshua commanded us in the Sermon of Mount:

“Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” Matthew 6:16-18

Yes, He just told us how, not if!

Messianic Believers also read from the New Testament book of Hebrews on Yom Kippur, especially chapters 5-7, which speak about Yeshua as the High Priest according to “the order of Melchizedek.”

For Jewish believers, Yom Kippur is not so much a day of our personal cleansing as it is one of prayer and intercession on behalf of our people, the people of Israel. Of course, we must have a clean heart when approaching God in this matter, just like the Temple priest did before he asked for mercies over his people.

Our sins are cleansed by the blood of Yeshua, our Saviour and Messiah, but we are fasting and praying for our nation as priests and representatives of the High Priest Yeshua today!

In his FAQ, he signs off to ones asking questions as servant of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, yet later on he states that this name is antichrist and claims the moniker "unworthy servant" of Yeshuwa. The language seems much old fashioned to me, but may be in some special cirkles they use this , or for special meetings like very near and good friends I suppose, so may be you and Patrick know each others already, and share in the trickery while acting like you do not know each others. Mr Patrick Geaney - contrary to your lying insinuations - correctly greeted me with the Jewish greeting "shalom aleichem" which literally translates into English "to you peace".

I would advise that you -whatever your real name- take up the study of the Hebrew language when you will learn for yourself why the greeting is expressed in the plural form "aleichem" even when addressed to one person.

Paul not one of "the 12 apostles of The Lamb" (Rev 21:14)

but he "BOASTED" that he was an apostle of "Satan". Fasting

While it is true that Isaiah 58 writes about fasting - & whilst fasting is essential & very important...Isaiah goes on to say in the same chapter -God tells the people that although they have been fasting, they are persuing their own interests etc (see verses 3-5) then goes on to tell them the kind of fasting He has chosen for them to practice! see verses 6 - 14 showing the blessing if we do what God has said....fasting in the prescribed manner the He has set down. May we learn to practice both!

Gods greatest desire is that NONE should perish. That includes ALL His c r e a t i on.
That the Jews are Gods cultivar (kuf reish shin hei), makes them only that, not the only people God loves. He loves His Son who wore the flesh of His cultivar.
It is the obligation of this cultivar to take the knowledge of the saving grace of God to the rest of the world. That is why Jonah is read at the Yom Kippur service. Jonah did not want the Ninevites to come to God by repenting.

So, once He dies as kapparah, He also became the Redemption offer for the Firstborn, so that the believer could leave the sin of Egypt and be immersed in Yeshua. If you read the Messianic Writings you will find, that Miriam of Magdala was forbidden to touch Yeshua before He had been to the Tepmle to present Himself as ''wave offering on behalf of His people''. Rosh haShanah and Succot, however, and in a way Yom Kippur (hence He did not die then) have not yet been entirely fullfilled. Yom Teruah when the books will be opened, Yom Kippur as ''the great and terrible day of the Lord'' (Soory, it''s not Sunday!), and Succot when the Lord will tabernacle again among His Jewish people. Don''t know where the Christians will be as they have rejected all of this as legalism.

Yeshua appears in all biblical festivals, which happen to be Jewish. So why did He not die on Yom Kippur? An excellent question which puzzled me for a long time. If you see it from the Jewish perspective it makes sense: The Pesach offering is NOT a sin offering, but marks the Redemption of the Firstborn, that is, Israel when it left Egypt. Our people were then immersed into Moshe, as the Scriptures state. But this was only one festival that carried Yeshua and the Torah Yeshua obeyed, the Torah Christians have thrown away. Time to sole search

I would like to say that Matthew 6:16-18 is speaking of a personal day of fasting done in secret. Where on Yom Kippur is a collective day of fasting and there is nothing secret about it. Also it is a day to be solemn, sole searching, and a time to be quiet and listen to what G-d wants to say to your soul. Yom Kippur is G-ds speed bump in life too make us slow down and check ourselves out. Even with the blood of Messiah we still goof up, have blind spots in our life that G-d wants to show us. We also have situations with other people that need to be worked out and G-ds speed bump is that time to do that. Yom Kippur is not a time to rejoice but a time to turn that search light that we shine on other, and turn it into ourselves. NOW! It is time for Sukkot and we have cleaned our self up, made things right with others, and it time to rejoice!

Dear Yosef. I’m sorry if I don’t quite understand your question but Jesus as the lamb of G-d died on the 14th day of the month of Nissan according to Exodus chapter 12 to atone for our sins. The law of the scape goat was fulfilled when Bar ABAS, (meaning son of G-d), was chosen to be set free and the true Son of G-d, (JESUS) was chosen to be sacrificed. As far as dealing with sin the next to the last paragraph in the article sort of points out that Yom Kippur day is not so much a day of our personal cleansing. First, a question?
How can a day be as a thousand years and a thousand years be as a day?
How did God the world?
Did God the whole universe?

Great Article

This is the first time I have observed or really even knew much about Yom Kippur. I am a Christian, but very, very interested in the Jewish roots of my faith. This is a great article and I have learned so much this past week. I fasted on Yom Kippur and prayed for the peace of Jerusalem and for the salvation of the Jewish people.

I have a question to leaders writing this commentary.
If you are saying that Yeshua took away your sins on Yom ha Kippurim, then why did he die on Pesaj and not on Yom Kippur ? Hope you study more judaism and look deeper on qualifications of Mashiaj and the type of sins that He will cover for his people and the world. I also hope you dont keep on separating the faith of our people which is the God of Yeshua, the God of Israel,the same God Yeshua serves and obeys. Jews will never see a Mashiaj the way you keep on teaching about it, those commentaries belong to the roman catholics and will never be on a jewish mind. Thank you.

Yom Kippur

I have gone to a Messianic congregation each Yom Kippur since moving back to the USA from Israel - the last time I wanted to stand up and begin shouting Hallelujah! because the sense of all that the Messiah has done for us was so great - there should be no mourning and weeping, but a celebrations of praise and thanksgiving!!!!
