Southern Iran is currently suffering an unprecedented plague of locusts that has already caused billions of dollars worth of damage.

“This happened in Egypt too, thousands of years ago, when Pharaoh messed with the God of Israel,” noted Israeli social media activist Hananya Naftali in a Twitter post showing the incredible locust swarm.

Locust swarms are not uncommon in the early summer months in the Middle East. Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Iran all regularly endure this phenomenon.

But the swarm now invading Iran is said to be the largest ever seen.

“Compared with last year, the swarms of desert locusts are much larger, and it is safe to claim that the recent attacks are unprecedented,” the head of the Chabahar Agricultural Trade Union told Iran’s ILNA news service.

Iranian officials say the current swarm has already attacked more than 494,000 acres of orchards and farmland in seven of Iran’s 31 provinces, and caused damage exceeding $7 billion.
