Not a month has passed since Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas joined other world leaders in a massive “freedom of speech” march through the streets of Paris (pictured) following a brutal terrorist attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo for publishing a series of political cartoons depicting Islam’s Prophet Mohammed.

The same Mahmoud Abbas has now ordered an investigation against the Palestinian newspaper Al Hayat al Jadida. The charge: Publishing a cartoon depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

The official Palestinian Authority news agency WAFA reported that Abbas had called for an “immediate investigation” into the matter, insisting that “we need take deterrent action against those responsible for this terrible mistake.”

Al Hayat al Jadida is itself an official media outlet of the Palestinian Authority. Last Sunday’s edition of the paper featured a political cartoon showing Prophet Mohammed holding a heart-shaped bag as he sowed “seeds of love” over the entire world.

Islam forbids depictions of Mohammed, positive or negative. The newspaper subsequently printed an apology on its front page.
