In Search of the Mountain of God: An Israel Today Desert Trek

Join us for an exciting 7-day hike through the Biblical wilderness to Mount Karkom, which some experts say is the fabled mount where Moses received the 10 Commandments

“So Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.”

This description in Exodus 24:4 matches a sight you can see with your own eyes at the foot of Mount Karkom. This mountain is located in southern Israel, in a restricted area of the Negev Desert. Visitors are only allowed to travel there three times a year, namely on the Jewish holidays of Passover, Sukkot and Hanukkah. Because of the hot summer climate, our 7-day desert trek is only possible during Hanukkah.

Mount Karkom is one of Israel’s most mysterious archaeological sites, with thousands of rock carvings. It is considered a sacred place, with people having made pilgrimages there for thousands of years. Rock slabs reminiscent of the Tablets of the Ten Commandments can be seen on the mountain.

In the 1970s, Israeli archaeologist Prof. Emmanuel Anati documented petroglyphs and anthropomorphic rock sculptures at the site. Around the mountain there are 1,300 archaeological sites and about 44,000 ancient rock paintings, mostly on the mountain. The scientist concluded that Mount Karkom is the site of the biblical Mount Sinai.

Our desert hiking trek to this special mountain offers a unique opportunity to get to know Israel in a new and different way – far from the usual tourist sites. It’s a journey for those who want to experience something completely new, switch off their internet, switch on tranquility, and connect with the God of Israel. The number of participants is limited; physical fitness is a prerequisite. Participants will only be accepted after a telephone conversation.

The trip will take place from December 15th to 22nd, 2022.

The price is 1,699 euros/$1,780 per person, not including flights.
