MembersWhat makes people heroes, and how can I be one?

I’ve met several real-life heroes, and they all have this one thing in common.

Israel is not for the faint of heart; it’s a land with a literal bible-length list of wars, a history of massacres and losses, a rollercoaster relationship with God, and a constant fight for vindication against its enemies.

Even though I have lived here for many years through the Second Intifada, operations, and wars, I often wondered whether or not I would find myself courageous if real danger arose and lives were on the line. Admittedly, I’m somewhat afraid to discover and be disappointed that I’m not so self-sacrificing. Since then, subconsciously, I’ve been searching desperately for heroes.

Even in times of relative quiet, this country will test everything in you, proving that perhaps you weren’t as brave as you thought or your convictions to keep the loftiest command of them all, which is to love, wasn’t as strong. As I’ve observed great men and women of valor, I’ve tried to concoct a magic potion, mixing together all the elements that make a Superman or Superwoman, bottle it up, and drink it.
