The Israel Defense Forces (Tzava Hagana L’Israel in Hebrew, or Tzahal for short) was officially established in May 1948, about two weeks after the founding of the state. It was a merger of former Jewish underground militias, primarily the Hagana and the Palmach. Since its inception, the IDF has fought seven wars, provided humanitarian aid to more than 25 countries (including citizens of the enemy state of Syria), and developed amazing new technologies.
During a special ceremony at the Armored Corps Memorial at Latrun, IDF Chief of Staff Gen.
