Through the organization Save a Child’s Heart, Israeli physicians are providing life-saving medical treatment to impoverished families on the African archipelago of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous Muslim-dominated region of Tanzania, which itself has a Christian majority.

At a special clinic in Zanzibar, Israeli doctors and medical personnel volunteer their time to screen young children with life-threatening heart conditions. Those in need of the most urgent treatment are flown to Israel for surgery, all of which is provided free of charge by Israeli hospitals and doctors.

Contrasting the stunning natural beauty of Zanzibar is the poverty in which most of its inhabitants live. Difficult economic conditions lead to unhealthy living, which in turn can result in avoidable sicknesses and disease. In addition to treating heart conditions, the team at Save a Child’s Heart is also providing education on healthy living and local treatment for a wide range of sicknesses to boost the overall quality of life.
