Almost half of all Dutch Jews hide their ethnicity, according to a recent study. Of the 557 Dutch Jews interviewed, 43 percent said they were afraid to expose themselves as such. For example, many will hide their Star of David pendant under their clothing, and will only wear a kippa (yarmulke) under a hat. They fear that to do otherwise would result in being assaulted.

Such fears are fueled by a rise in antisemitism in recent years. Forty-eight percent of respondents said they avoid any and all situations which could prompt some kind of antisemitic reaction. Fifty-two percent confirmed increased antisemitism in public, 59 percent said they see more of it in the media, and 82 percent said hatred of Jews has become increasingly prevalent on the Internet.

Thirty-four percent of the Jews surveyed said they had personally suffered racist insults, and 89 percent of those said the insults directly referenced Israel....
