Israeli life expectancy is in the top ten globally, confounding experts who say local conflicts and tensions make that unexpected.

Life expectancy in Israel was recently reported at 82.6 years, with international leader Japan just a bit higher at 84.5 years. (Germany came in at 80.8 and the USA at 76.4)

Researchers are amazed that Israel’s life expectancy could be so high in spite of her conflicts and tensions. Professor Alex Weinreb suggested these factors may be part of the explanation:

  • Favorable distance from the equator;
  • Proximity of most of the Israeli population to the Mediterranean Sea;
  • A culture of community support, especially among the Orthodox; and
  • Physical exercise associated with IDF service.
