Last week I had a surreal experience at Capernaum on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.
I was taking a childhood friend on a micro-tour of Israel (his first time here). We had just eaten a late lunch of Fish-n-Chinese at Decks restaurant right on the western shore of the lake.
The weather was perfect. The Catholic monks allowed us into the Capernaum site near the end of the day. We looked out over the thick black basalt stone walls in ruin – hundreds of cramped rooms connected in a maze of alleyways, testifying to the first century fishing village of New Testament fame. We looked at the white limestone ruins of the synagogue with its stately stone columns where the Nazarene directed the hunger of the hearers toward the Bread of Life (the same hearers who had just the day before eaten the multiplied fish and bread – John 6).
Fast forward to 2025. The last 2 groups of tourists were leaving as my friend and I went up into the special lookout chapel that the Catholics have constructed over...
