The race for the position of UN Secretary-General is entering another decisive phase. This coming Friday, Security Council members will hold another round of voting as part of the selection process. The key questions center on whether the leading candidate, Rebeca Grynspan, can further consolidate her lead, whether the remaining candidates will narrow the gap, and above all, how the entry of a new candidate into the race will affect the balance of power.
The new candidate is Ivonne A-Baki from Ecuador, whose candidacy was submitted by the Kingdom of Tonga. This is a relatively unusual step, as Ecuador itself has not officially endorsed her candidacy. This places A-Baki among the group of candidates who had to rely on other states when submitting their candidacy — a circumstance that could also provide an indication of how much political support she already enjoys in the first phase of the race.
