In Israel, there is disbelief at the total lack of backbone shown by European states. There is deep disappointment that Europe is offering no meaningful support either to the United States or to Israel in the conflict with Iran.

In my conversations with Israeli government officials, all have expressed deep disappointment with Europe and its stance on the war with Iran. “Europe is going through its ugliest hour,” said one, who attacked what he described as Europe’s weakness toward Iran: “Their policy of appeasement has exploded in our face.”

Neither in protecting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, nor in defending Cyprus or Arab states that are under heavy Iranian missile and drone fire, has Europe shown any initiative. Particularly serious, Israeli officials say, is Europe’s lack of self-reflection. The same powers that once pushed the nuclear deal with Iran now fail to see any connection between that path and the result: 450 kilograms of enriched uranium on the one hand, and a monstrous missile arsenal on the other, now threatening the entire world.

In Western Europe, support for Israel is nowhere to be found. On the contrary, Israel is receiving almost nothing but condemnation, while pro-Iran demonstrations are taking place in the streets.
