While I write these lines, we are celebrating Rosh Hashanah in Israel. The new Jewish year has just begun. At home, however, things look less festive than usual. Moving boxes are everywhere. After many years, we are leaving our old apartment in Modi’in and moving into a new one. Only a few kilometers separate the two apartments – and yet it feels like a real new beginning.
Once Rosh Hashanah is behind us, the move begins. It falls right in the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur – a time when we look back, reflect, and at the same time look forward.
I am not a religious person. But moments like these give even me pause for thought.
When moving, the question of the old and the new becomes very practical. What do we still need? What has accumulated over the years? What comes with us to the new apartment, and what can we finally let go of?
Perhaps a new year is not so different.
