Oil Refinery Explodes in Northern Israel

Officials say far bigger catastrophe was miraculously avoided, but ecological damage is severe

An large gas tank at an oil refinery in the northern port city of Haifa exploded Sunday morning.

Officials are still unsure how the fire started. Some 40 firefighting teams worked tirelessly to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby tanks, some of which contain dangerous materials.

Miraculously, the tank that exploded was relatively empty at the time of the incident. Had it been full of gas, Israel could be facing catastrophe.
