If true peace requires a change of mindset, especially among Arabs raised to view Israel as their eternal foe, then the Western-backed political peace process has been a monumental failure. But at these hospitals, Arab hearts and minds are being changed, and that’s a foundation for genuine peace.
At Ziv Medical Center alone, Israel has treated over 1,100 Syrians badly wounded in their country’s ongoing civil war. Nearly all of them required complex orthopedic surgery for severe blast and shrapnel injuries. Most of those injured in the torso or head are already dead, explained Prof. Alexander Lerner, head of Orthopedic Surgery at Ziv. The hospital appears to be sorely understaffed and underfunded to be handling a situation like this.
