The Palestinians have been one of the very few groups on the international stage to support Syrian dictator Bashar Assad amidst a bloody civil war that has claimed half a million lives. It’s becoming increasingly clear why.

Assad and his father before him played host for decades to terror groups like Hamas, making their regime a premier patron of the Palestinian cause. The fall of the Assad dynasty would not only deprive the Palestinians of a major backer, it threatens to expose their victimhood as being of their own making. As more and more Syrians engage with Israel as a source of hope and aid in these harrowing times, the lie that Israel is the intractable foe of all Arabs is crumbling.

Invited to speak in Jerusalem by the Hebrew University’s Truman Center for the Advancement of Peace, Syrian opposition figures Sirwan Kajjo and Issam Zeitoun sought to convey the horrific plight of their people.

“I am humbled to stand here in Jerusalem as a Syrian, and you know exactly what I mean,” started Kajjo, a Kurdish journalist now living in the US. He urged Israel to continue and even increase its assistance to the Syrian people.
