After 42 stops in the desert and just before the nation of Israel entered the Promised Land, God gave Moses a significant command: “…to the larger you shall give more inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give less inheritance” (Numbers 33:54).

Israel’s Torah clearly states that there is inequality in life; there are those who have little and those who have much. We receiving according to our need and give according to our ability. The State of Israel and its tax system was established on this principle. Those who have much give more than those who have little.

 

The Torah teaches us that not everyone is equal, and therefore I should not expect everyone to give me what I give him and not compare my own giving to that of others. It also teaches that when we are blessed with abundance, we should give from it without considering what we will receive from others in return.

 

Wow, what a difficult lesson to learn! Right?
