Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven, and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. (Genesis 19:24-25) The most important indication that Sodom and Gomorra were located in the Dead Sea region is, of course, the unique formation of sulfur compounds there, which are clearly identified in the biblical text. The entire area is covered in a layer of sulfur. Even the Roman-Jewish historian Josephus wrote that the Dead Sea and the surrounding desolation was caused by the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Accordingly, one finds in the five ruined cities a layer of ash and other clear signs of sudden destruction. The evidence found at these ruins suggests a very fiery end.
