Many soldiers prefer to eat elsewhere at lunchtime. Such was the case at the IDF Southern Command headquarters in Beersheva. Then a decision was made to completely renovate the facility. And it wasn’t just the external features that were changed, the culinary range on offer was also greatly expanded.
“It became clear to me that we had to do something,” said Major Sagiv Shalom, the base commander. “The quality of the meals and the external appearance of the canteen had to be improved.”
The result was a real eye-opener, including what was on the plates. The canteen was refurnished and equipped with service stations. “Our canteen now has a greater resemblance to the dining room in a hotel than to an army kitchen,” the commander said happily.
