Over the past week, Hamas renewed its attacks on southern Israel by launching incendiary balloons and firing a mortar. Israel responded by attacking Hamas targets in Gaza, but clearly wants to avoid further escalation.
On orders of the new Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Benny Gantz, Israeli also allowed the transfer of $50 million cash from Qatar to poor families in Gaza. But Hamas officials are responsible for distributing the money, so it’s not clear how much of the Qatari aid ends up in the hands of people who really need it.
Hamas spends a lot of energy in preserving the classic narrative of poverty and misery in Gaza, where 50 percent of the workforce is now jobless.
However, there is another story to tell about Gaza that doesn’t make it into the mainstream media.
Gaza for real
Every few weeks, new malls, fancy restaurants, coffee shops or clothing stores have been opening in Gaza, and photo’s of these openings are circulating on social media.
