Fire and Brimstone, It’s Coming!

Did you know there is actual evidence of the fiery brimstone that destroyed Sodom and Gommorah?

We don’t hear much “fire and brimstone” preaching these days, but are we missing something? Did you know that fire and brimstone really did rain down on Sodom and Gomorrah? What does that mean for us today?

Numerous scriptures warn of God’s judgement falling on mankind, and “fire and brimstone raining down” serves as a vivid picture of just how terrible it can be.

The account of destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and “the whole region,” is not just a scary tall tale. We now know that it occurred exactly as described in the Biblical account that “it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all” (Luke 17:29-30).

Balls of sulfur or fiery hailstones were found scattered across the Dead Sea basin of these two “sin cities.” These are clearly the remnants of the brimstone and fire that once rained down and destroyed the entire region.

Sulfur nodules can be seen scattered in the Dead Sea basin, remnants of the brimstone mentioned in the Bible that rained divine fire on the cities of the plain as described in Genesis.

Watch a sulfur ball slowly melt down as it burns up.

Try to imagine a massive hailstorm of these fiery rocks falling on the people of the city melting through flesh and the stone buildings where they tried to escape. You begin to get a picture of how much fear and destruction these flaming balls of fire caused.

Peter warns us that brimstone and fire “reducing them to ashes is an example of what is coming on the ungodly” (2 Pt. 2:6). Indeed, they are evidence to the entire world of “the judgement of eternal fire” (Jude 1:7).

Thankfully, a similar fate awaits the enemies of God and his people. “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone” (Rev 19:20).

Is God’s Judgement Still Coming?

As part of our Summer Celebration, we opened a Facebook chat for you to share your comments on this. What do we need to learn from this terrible judgement? Does God still judge the ungodly in this way? Should we expect actual fire and brimstone, or is this just a fiery warning? What needs to happen before God finally sends his judgements on us?

Share your views and let’s see if we can all get a better understanding of what we need to do to stay safe from the judgements to come. We look forward to hearing from you.
