Allenby on Tour in Jerusalem

T hroughout its history, the city of Jerusalem has experienced many great moments. Some are legendary, for example the arrival of General Edmund Allenby on the afternoon of December 11, 1917, at the Jaffa Gate and the Tower of David. “A Hanukkah Miracle” or “A Christmas Gift” were just two of the many terms used to describe this event, during which the Ottomans, who had ruled the city for over 400 years, were finally ousted by the British Empire. Jerusalem, a city holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims, had a new government.

The exhibition “A General and A Gentleman – Allenby at the Gates of Jerusalem” opened at the Tower of David museum in December 2017 to mark 100 years since that conquest. The large collection of films, documents, posters memorabilia and personal diaries all paint a very clear picture of life at the end of the First World War. On the morning of December 8, 1917, the Turks hastily retreated. They abandoned the city. Those bearing the white flag of surrender, improvised from tattered sheets and a broomstick, searched for the commanders...
