“This is reminiscent of what happened in German universities in the 1930s,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in addressing the pro-Palestinian demonstrations sweeping American campuses. While the protests are ostensibly against the policies of the State of Israel, in many instances Jewish students and faculty have been targeted due to their presumed association with the Jewish state. According to Netanyahu, these demonstrations, if not quelled, are just the beginning of much worse things to come.

There are voices on the Jewish and Israeli side of the aisle that fail or refuse to see the situation as dire. Dr. Shira Klein, an associate professor and chair of the Department of History at Chapman University, told Israel Today that “there is nothing in the campus protests that is remotely similar to the 1930s.” She asserted that “the protests are often led by Jews,” and dismissed the ever-present keffiyeh Arab headdress, which many see as a symbol of jihadism. “Plenty of people wear the keffiyeh.
