The Imam of the Al-Tawhid Mosque in the Israeli town of Umm al-Fahm openly called for support of the Islamic State in a July 2nd sermon. He accused Hamas of being too moderate and accused the organization of collaborating with Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also denigrated by Imam Muhammad Abd Al-Ghani as a “Jewish dog”. The Muslim cleric further accused the Jews of being behind every disaster that plagued the Islamic people.

The population of Umm al-Fahm, located on the border of Samaria under Palestinian Authority control, consists exclusively of Arabs. The name of the centuries-old city means “mother of coal”, and charcoal production was the village’s primary business once. Israel’s former foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, had previously suggested swapping the village for inclusion in the Palestinian territories in exchange for Jewish settlements. The residents of Umm al-Fahm had rejected this outright.

Imam al-Ghani’s scandalous statements in his sermon were revealed by MEMRI (Middle East Media Research Institute). MEMRI follows, translates and publishes articles from the Arab media.

MEMRI also reports that Al-Ghani was instructed to remove the symbol of the ISIS terrorist group from the entrance of his mosque by Israel’s Police. The symbol, however, continues to appear on his YouTube account.
